From Southern Hospitality to Gourmet Everday

Deborah Joell

I’ve had a love of cooking since I was in my early teens.  Growing up in the south (Georgia actually) I was always surrounded by great tasting food, but never allowed to cook.  My Mother and Grandmother would always say “my kitchen, I’m the cook, but you can wash the dishes”.  That is probably why I hate doing dishes to this day.

I remember while I was in high school I would always get the Wednesday’s paper Food Section and read through all the recipes.  When I came across one that I had never heard of (being from the South and in the late 60s that was not so uncommon), I would cut them out and glue them to index cards and put them on a rolodex.  I actually still have that rolodex, somewhere.

After I got married and had “My Kitchen”, I couldn’t wait to start preparing all the recipes that I had collected over the years.  Unfortunately, my husband (like most southern men) was not the adventurous type when it came to his dinner.  So I was sequestered to a life of mundane, repetitive meals. Fortunately, that sentence was only eight years long.

After three children, and about a 100 cookbooks later, I decided to open my catering business so that I could make all the gourmet dishes that I wanted and people would actually eat them.

Now I want to share my love of cooking to as many people as I can.
